Cate Campbell claims Women’s 50m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Cate Campbell of Indooroopilly claimed gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on final day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Thursday, March 22.
The 19-year-old Campbell once again overpowered her teammate and her sister, Bronte Campbell as she captured gold medal of the single lap freestyle event. The event was dominated by both Campbell sisters as they secured top two spots of the swim and ensured
their participation at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
With her immaculate efforts, Campbell enjoyed an advantage of 0.17 seconds over her sister and stepped on the medal rostrum for gold medal by posting a time of 24.44 seconds. She was chased by Bronte, who settled on the finishing end for silver medal as
she tapped the wall with the timing of 24.61 seconds.
She was followed by Yolane Kukla, who missed out her spot in the Australian team to London by a margin of just 0.15 seconds. The 16-year-old Kukla surfaced on the finishing end for third fastest spot of the swim as she posted a time of 24.76 seconds.
She remained 0.01 seconds ahead of Libby Trickett of Chandler, who snared fourth finest spot of the swim by posting a time of 24.77 seconds. The fifth spot of the event was obtained by Alice Tait of Southport Olympic Swimming Club, who remained just an inch
behind her former swimmer and secured fifth place of the discipline with an effort of 24.85 seconds.
The 25-year-old Tait was trailed by Olivia Halicek of University of New South Wales, who ended sixth in the single lap freestyle discipline by submitting 25.11 seconds. The 23-year-old Halicek was chased by Alicia Coutts of Redlands, who transpired on the
finishing wall as seventh position holder by reporting 25.27 seconds.
The final spot of the event was obtained by Marieke Guehrer of Melbourne, who finished eighth with the timing of 25.36 seconds.
Campbell was overjoyed after accomplishing her London qualification dream and stated that she will try to make her nation proud at the mega stage of sports.
