Cate Campbell triumphs Women 100m freestyle: Day five – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Cate Campbell of Indooroopilly earned top qualification spot of the Women’s 100m freestyle on fifth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Monday, March 19.
The Australian Championship is a Selection Trial and provides an opportunity to their local swimmers to ensure their qualification into the Australian squad to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 19-year-old Campbell stifled hopes of her challengers as she outperformed them on the finishing end for top qualification spot in the semi-final. With her intellectual efforts, she remained just a touch away from her following swimmer, Yolane Kukla of St Peters Western Swim Club.
Campbell hit the finishing end with an effort of 54.26 seconds. Her impeccable swim placed her just 0.01 seconds ahead of 16-year-old Kukla, who reached the semi-final of double lap event by posting a second best time of 54.27 seconds.
Kukla was trailed by 17-year-old Emma McKeon of Wests Illawarra, who stayed 0.34 seconds slower from her former finisher and ended her sprint in a third fastest time of 54.61 seconds. The fourth qualifying position of the event was obtained by Campbell’s teammate, Bronte Campbell, who was just 0.05 seconds behind and clocked an effort of 54.66 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 200m backstroke, where Matson Lawson of Tigersharks accomplished top qualifying position of the event. The 19-year-old Lawson remained prominently ahead of his strongest challenger and transpired on the finishing end by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 59.35 seconds.
He was the only swimmer to post a sub two minute effort in the discipline. His alluring sprint placed him 0.69 seconds ahead of Hayden Stoeckel of Berri, who accomplished second position of the event with an effort of 2 minutes and 00.04 seconds.
The 27-year-old Stoeckel was followed by Ashley Delaney of Nunawading, who ended third with the timing of 2 minutes and 00.06 seconds. He remained 0.80 seconds ahead of Joshua Beaver, who occupied fourth position with the timing of 2 minutes and 00.86 seconds.
In addition, the championship will end on March 22 after the completion of Australian team to the London Olympics.
