Catherine DeLoof clinches Girls 100yard freestyle gold – Michigan Girls State Championships
Catherine DeLoof of GP South Holland High School clinched the title of Girls 100yard freestyle in Division 2 at the 2011 Michigan High School State Championships on Saturday, November 19.
The 9-year-old DeLoof entered the final round as top contender for gold medal. With her persistent efforts, she sustained her fastest spot in the final round and met the expectations of her fans by clinching gold medal of the event.
She posted a miraculous time of 50.80 seconds to cement her place for the title of freestyle swim. Her gold winning effort remained 0.86 seconds behind Division 2 mark of 49.94 seconds, set by E. Bos of Holland in 2009. She also remained 2.21 seconds slower from the All Class mark of 48.59 seconds, held by K. Joyce of Pioneer from 2002.
The gold medallist was just a touch away from her following swimmer Holly Morren of Holland High School, who settled on the podium for silver medal with an effort of 50.94 seconds.
The 10-year-old Morren remained 0.58 seconds ahead of her subsequent opponent, Alexandra M DeLoof of GP South High School, who produced a third fastest time of 51.52 seconds.
The 12-year-old DeLoof was tracked by Morren's team-mate, Klare Northuis, who stayed 0.61 seconds slower from third position holder and ended fourth in a time of 52.13 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed an irresistible effort of Holland High School's Cassie Misiewicz in the 500yard freestyle. The 10-year-old Misiewicz outperformed her competitors in the freestyle playoff and secured the podium for gold medal by submitting a time of 5 minutes and 03.58 seconds.
She was 0.93 seconds ahead of Ellie Dean of Midland Dow High School, who secured the victory stand for silver medal by producing a time of 5 minutes and 04.51 seconds.
Dean remained almost half a second ahead of her following rival, Chelsea Abbott of Birmingham Seaholm High School, who grabbed bronze medal of the event by reporting a time of 5 minutes and 05.00 seconds.
The spectators enjoyed laudable efforts of all participants, who tried to prove their best for gold medal. In addition, the winners were awarded accolades for their wonderful swims after the session.
