Question:

Catholics, why don't you think the things said about Mary were added to the bible?

Because it just makes no sense, no one spoke of Mary outside of the 4 gospels, and if she was such as big deal as some parts of the 4 gospels suggest, then surely she would have been talked about.

So why don't you think it was added later on?

  1. Be very careful "Lion of Judah." This is the mother of the Living God you're speaking ill of.

By your logic then, anything and everything that appears only in the Gospels is bogus? You'd better go back and read again sweetie. See what other nuggets of Christian wisdom you'll have to do away with.

In Revelation, the "woman clothed with the sun" is Mary. So you'll have to disregard Revelation while you're disregarding the Gospels.

You might also want to read Isaiah again.

  2. Jesus only needed Mary as a vessel in which to be born through. Mary knew about God, so Jesus didn't have to teach her anything, she already knew. Jesus sole interest was to help those who DIDN'T have faith or believe in God. Mary served her purpose by giving birth to Jesus. Jesus tells us in the bible to pray like so...Our Father, who art in heaven..He was giving us an example as of how to pray. He didn't say pray to Mary or saints, He was telling us to pray(talk) to God from our hearts. God knows all that is in our minds anyway. The catholics have their own bible, I have one myself but don't read that one because I am an ex-catholic and don't believe in the corrupted books they added to the bible, I believe there are  6 of them, because the average bible has 66 books. The catholics believe a lot of things that are not true or right, as in calling a priest 'father' and calling the pope 'holy father'. There is but ONE Father, and He is in heaven, no man deserves to be called 'father', in fact the bible states this.

  3. Um...Catholics respect Mary as the mother of Jesus.  That's a pretty big deal, when you think about it.  Plus, since they believe she remained a virgin for life, you have to admit it's quite a feat to be married all those years and never consummate the marriage.  We're talking major Chastity Powers here.

  4. Well, she's in the books of Acts, like many of the 12 apostles, who aren't mentioned any where else....I guess we should assume they weren't important either, right?

Your logic is flawless, isn't it?  Do you really think that if Jesus is the King of Kings and Son of God, He'll be angry at you if you praise His mother?  What, was Jesus a "problem child" who hated His mom?

Saul/Paul didn't mention her for the same reason Paul never mentions any of Jesus's miracles - it was so well-known to his audiences he didn't HAVE TO...

  5. Men wrote, edited, and translated the bible for their own purposes. There has always been a plot by the religious hierarchy to diminish the power of women.

  6. You know, I asked the Catholics to stop saying the name "Mary", but they just wouldn't listen...

  7. because Saul of Tarsus never mentioned her i'm inclined to think she didn't exist.

  8. I know that you know that Catholics do not hold to sola scriptura.  Some information about Mary comes from the Protoevangelium of James.  We see nothing wrong with this.

  9. The Bible is the best preserved book from the ancient world.  The handful of passages that have been added by later redactors are well-known to scholars and omitted in current editions.  Mary was featured prominently in the original gospel narratives.

Mary is also mentioned in Acts 1:14: "They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers."

I'm surprised to see a Protestant who professes to cling only to the Bible as a source of Christian information reject the Bible.

An important historical document which supports the teaching of Mary’s perpetual virginity is the Protoevangelium of James, which was written probably less than sixty years after the conclusion of Mary’s earthly life (around A.D. 120), when memories of her life were still vivid in the minds of many.

Many other Church Fathers wrote about Mary.  For example, Irenaeus, in Against Heresies in 189, wrote, "The Virgin Mary, being obedient to his word, received from an angel the glad tidings that she would bear God."

  10. Perfect example of picking and choosing what you want to believe and follow in the bible, and telling others they are wrong for the parts THEY pick and choose.

That is what you call: a hypocrite.

  11. Just like everything in the bible...fake.

  12. "Because it just makes no sense, no one spoke of Mary outside of the 4 gospels"

Wrong. Plenty of the Church Fathers talked about Mary, and many, many other things to boot.

We don't hold to the man made theory of sola scripture.

"There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written"

How do you know Jesus didn't talk about His mother?

She is first mentioned in Genesis 3:15, as the Woman whose offspring (Jesus) will crush the head of the serpent (Satan).

    Revelation 11:19-12:2:

"Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, voices, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery."

I see her mentioned from beginning to end, actually.

For reasons I can not explain, some people are so convinced that Catholics worship Mary, that they overreact and commit what I feel is a grave sin. Mary is reduced to the role of an insignificant player in God’s plan that God used and then threw away. Can you think of a single other example, in Scripture, where God uses someone once then casts them aside like yesterday’s newspaper?

  13. Mary was added as a Goddess replacement for the missionaries that realized that polytheists would be more accepting of Christianity if there was a "Goddess" to latch on to.

Most of the beliefs about Mary's supernaturality was invented in the past 200 years.
