  1. Not much detail was released as to why.

  2. No I have not heard of this in fact a hymn was song recently at mass

"Yahweh I know you are near".

Can you name the source of your information?

  3. If I say the name three times fast does that mean it'll appear in my attic?

  4. You really ought not to even write the word out.

It is a Hebrew Name for God, and it is never pronounced, out of respect.

It's all over the Hebrew Bible -- what you probably know as the so-called Old Testament, a term that many find offensive, although one thinks they could find a life or something, but I digress.

Whenever you see "The LORD", [with "lord" spelled out with capital letters] it's a substitute for the Holy Name of God.

I had not heard of this order, but it's a good thing. There is a RC translation of the Bible known as the Jerusalem Bible (and a newer version of the same, called the New Jerusalem Bible), which actually prints the Holy Name. So there's a real reason to pay some attention to this.

The Jerusalem Bible is, of all things, a re-translation of a translation originally into FRENCH!! The French have no problem with spelling out the Holy Name, which tells you something about the French.

In the English language the tradition not to use the Holy Name is pretty strong, going back the the King James Version. The American Standard Version (1901) used the bastardization spelling "Jehovah," which is a nonsense word, and has no meaning. I wonder if the Papal order also covers the word Jehovah.

  5. Yes as a sign of respect and a return to old traditions. I for one have never heard it used commonly. For the person below who insisted on answering although he is not a Catholic, Jesus is mentioned several times at every Mass. Get a grip.

    Rome: Ixnay on the "Yahweh"

Last Friday, the US bishops received their second summer communique from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, this one dated 29 June.

Bottom line: the Tetragrammaton -- the Hebrew notation for the name of God -- is now forbidden to be "used or pronounced" in worship.

  6. First I have heard of it, but I hope the first answerer is correct and we are returning to traditions in the church

  7. Yes. Some Jewish people are offended by the use of that name of God, so we should refrain from using it.

  8. i'm not surprised.

when was the last time they mentioned jesus ?
