  1. Catherine of Great was born as  Sophia Augusta Frederica  of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1729. The exact date of her birth is not known (both May 2 and April 21 are named as likely dates), however most scholars are inclined to the May 21 version.

After the death of Empress Elizabeth on January 5, 1762, Catherine's husband Peter succeeded Elizabeth as Peter III. He wasn't exactly popular in Russia because of his eccentric ways.

In July 1762, Peter left for Oranienbaum with his solely Holstein-born courtiers and his mistress, and left Catherine in Saint Petersburg. On july 13 the Leib Guard revolted and proclaimed Catherine the ruler of Russia. Not a single drop of blood was shred. According to Ekatirina Dashkova (Catherine's closest friend and also the sister of Peter's mistress), Peter didn't mind 'getting rid of the Crown' at all and wanted only a quiet place to live the rest of his life. Nevertheless, on July 17, he was killed by Alexei Orlov (all Orlov brothers were favourites of Catherine and she had close intimate relationships with the older brother, Gregori).  Different historians argue whether Catherine knew/took part in the murder. Most modern historians are more inclined to believe she didn't.

Using the precedent of Catherine I (who succeded her husband Peter the Great without having any direct claims to the Throne), Catherine succeeded Peter III, citing the 'unanimous choice of the nation' as her main arguing point.

She reigned from June 28, 1762 to November 17, 1796.
