Catriona Matthew says LGU’s decision about Charley Hull is unwise
Catriona Matthew, who recently expressed her resentment over the Ladies Golf Union (LGU) for disallowing Charley Hull to participate in the Curtis Cup, has once again lashed out at the officials of the Union for their decision.
Matthew, one of the greatest Scottish female golfers, has said that she still sticks by what she has maintained regarding Hull’s issue.
Charley Hull, a rising English player, recently shocked the golf world after she pulled out of the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup squad.
Hull decided to participate in the Kraft Nabisco Championship after she received an invitation from the officials.
As soon as Hull was confirmed about the invitation for Kraft Nabisco Championship, she decided not to head to Nairn, Scotland, to join the Curtis Cup trial session.
Several analysts and critics gave their opinions regarding Hull’s step, with some slamming the teen for what she did.
Sharing her thoughts about what Hull has been going through, Matthew said that LGU did not realise the importance of the Curtis Cup.
She said that the decision to keep Hull out of the Cup will not bring any positive changes in women’s golf.
“I think it is a bit short-sighted of the LGU,” Matthew said. She maintained that there were no hurdles in taking Hull on board, as the dates of the two events—Curtis Cup and Kraft Nabisco Championship do not clash.
“When she [Hull] did that, she hadn’t received the invitation for the Kraft Nabisco,” added Matthew.
Matthew argued that she once faced the same situation as Hull. She said that she also had an opportunity as an amateur to play at a bigger level.
She participated in the Weetabix Women’s British Open in the 1993 season. Matthew said that participating in events like this gives plenty of confidence to younger players.
“Playing with pros is a good learning experience for amateurs as you test yourself against the best. You pick up things like course strategy, so I think this is a good chance for Charley to play in a ladies’ major and get more experience for the Curtis Cup,”
she said.
She cast doubts on the selection criteria the LGU officials have adopted for the Britain & Ireland squad.
“I also can’t see how the team is being picked based on holding a trial over one weekend,” she maintained.
