Catriona Matthew eager to grab her second British Open title
Scottish Catriona Matthew may have let the Kingsmill Championship title slip through her hands as she came quite close to winning. However, the upcoming Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 can bring her plenty of surprises as she has already won the event in 2009.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 is set to kick off from September 13-16, at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom.
It will see Matthew take on her rivals in a battle that means much more to her than any other player in the roster.
Matthew is performing well in the current season and is still as agile as ever because the 43-year-old veteran still plays both on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and Ladies European Tour (LET) — something that reflects her deep interest in the sport of golf.
The Scottish star is being regarded as one of the strongest contenders for the coveted title, due largely to her victory at the 2009 edition of the tournament.
The 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open saw her display a solid performance as she posted an overall 285 to grab a 3-stroke victory against Karrie Webb of Australia.
Observers said that repeating her 2009 performance at Hoylake will not be easy, as the current world number one Yani Tseng will also be putting her skills to the test.
Tseng, who appears to have got off her winning track in recent weeks, tops the list of hot favourites as she has won the two consecutive events of the Ricoh Women’s British Open in 2010 and 2011.
In addition to Tseng, the roster will also feature current world number two Stacy Lewis. Lewis has been in high spirits since the start of the current season, and her ability to inflict trouble on her rivals is still intact as she has won two victories in 2012.
She won the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in April and ShopRite LPGA Classic in June this year.
Matthew may not be as good when it comes to the number of victories in the current LPGA season, but Lewis speaks highly of her skills.
Speaking to the LPGA during her interview on Tuesday, Lewis said that she is going to tee off along with Matthew, which is very challenging, and exciting at the same time.
“She's great to play with. She definitely knows how to play this style of golf. I played her a couple of matches in Ireland last year at Solheim Cup, and this weather just suits her game to a tee. So maybe I'll pick up a few things from her,” the American golfer said of Matthew.
