Catriona Matthew eyes title at Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012
Scottish Catriona Matthew, who won the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open in grand style, is in the roster of 2012 edition of the prestigious tournament.
Matthew is going to battle top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) rivals, as she is seeking to repeat her 2009 performance this time. Although the Scottish star mostly plays on the LET (Ladies
European Tour), battling LPGA stars clearly will not be uphill task for the Scottish prodigy, given vast experience she has gained over the years.
The field for the tournament includes several top-ranked contenders, but the players who are expected to steal the show at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Wirral, on September 13, are current world number one Yani
Tseng, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Na Yeon Choi, Cristie Kerr, Melissa Reid, Ji Yai Shin and Laura Davies of England.
The officials of the much-hyped tournament have unveiled a poster featuring key LPGA players, who have been the star performers in the said tournament. The poster that was brought out just recently depicts
Yani Tseng, who is the defending champion of the tournament, on top. Tseng is flanked by Paula Creamer of the United States, Cristie Kerr, Norwegian Suzann Pettersen and others.
Commentators have said that the battle at Wirral is going to be pretty tough, given the fearsome roster. They pointed out that the spotlight is likely to remain on the defending champion Tseng who is battling
grim performance.
Tseng kicked off the current season in impressive style as she won three tournaments earlier this year, but her performance has worsened in recent tournaments. More importantly, the world’s most influential
female golfer has missed the cut in some of the recent events.
Matthew might have missed a chance to clinch a victory at the last edition of the Ricoh Women’s British Open, held in Scotland, but she appears eager to settle score this time.
“The Ricoh Women’s British Open will be the pinnacle of the summer for all of us and seeing the marketing material going out makes me realise it isn’t too far away,” the Scottish golfer shared her thoughts
while speaking to the media. “I have fantastic memories of playing in the Curtis Cup match at Hoylake in 1992 and I really am looking forward to playing in my first professional tournament there”.
