Catriona Matthew finishes inside top 5 in Malaysia
Scottish Catriona Matthew played well at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 as she shot an overall 273 to take the fourth position on the leaderboard.
Matthew, who won her last LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) title at Lorena Ochoa Invitational in November 2011, participated in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia with an aim to end her
protracted victory drought on the Tour.
Although shooting a 273 was not enough to help her sail to triumph, commentators said Matthew’s performance looked much better than before and the 43-year-old is now determined to take on
rivals in the coming LPGA tournaments for the 2012 season.
The Scottish star improved her score in the last round as she was standing tied for 6th after posting a 70 in the third round, but a 67 on Sunday helped her grab a position inside
the top five.
The last round, at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, was the scene of a nerve-racking battle as South Korean Inbee Park ramped up pressure on rivals by carding a 65 in the third round.
Matthew started the fourth round with plenty of enthusiasm as she parred the first six holes. She then drained her first birdie on the difficult par-3 7th hole.
On the back nine, the LPGA titan looked more brazen and relaxed as she held her nerve on almost all the holes. She shot birdies on the 10th and 12th, boosting her position.
She carded two straight birdies on the 16th and 17th.
Inbee Park recorded an overall score of 269 to clinch a two-stroke victory against fellow South Korean Na Yeon Choi who registered a 271.
Matthew has not only proved her mettle on the LPGA, but she has also done well on the LET (Ladies European Tour) in her long career.
Her notable achievement is a victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open in 2009.
The star golfer has been in professional golf since 1995, but she still trains hard on the practice range.
Matthew has had her husband on her bag for the last 16 years now, and she is clearly happy about it, but said in one of her interviews that things may change now.
“Now my eldest daughter is starting school, he's probably not going to do it all the time but yeah, it's worked out well for us,” she said.
