Catriona Matthew hopes to keep momentum going after Asia tour
Scottish Catriona Matthew is confident that her better-than-average performance in Asia will help her rise to the top at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.
Matthew, who is the defending champion at the upcoming Lorena Ochoa Invitational, scheduled for November 8-11 at Guadalajara, has done well in the recent LPGA’s journey to Asia, where she took part in three tournaments.
In Asia, the Scottish star displayed a stellar performance and managed to record finishes inside the top five—something very crucial for her to move up in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Sharing her thoughts to the LPGA Tour during her pre-tournament interview in Mexico on Wednesday, Matthew expressed her confidence in her current form, saying she is at her best these days, and will try to capitalise on the experience she gained in Asia.
“I´ve played well the last few weeks in Asia. So I look forward to these last two events of the year and hopefully just move up to that first place,” said Matthew who has won four LPGA titles and five LET (Ladies European Tour) titles so far her in her professional career.
She took part at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 on October and subdued most of her nearest rivals, recording a four-place finish.
She then headed to South Korea next week to participate in the LPGA Hana Bank Championship. Her performance was more than amazing in South Korea as she almost crushed her nearest rival but had to settle for the second position due to mistakes on some holes.
The Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2012, which featured giants like defending champion Yani Tseng and Suzann Pettersen, saw the veteran golfer rise to the fourth position.
Commentators said that given her latest performance, Matthew can defend her title as she has vast experience of the course—Guadalajara Country Club, and the local spectators will mostly likely get behind her.
“For me obviously winning last year to come back is very fresh in my mind. To come back and play the golf course I can remember some of the shots I hit from last year. I´ve always enjoyed this golf course,” the defending champion said.
