Catriona Matthew ready to defend title in Mexico
Scottish Catriona Matthew, who won the 2011 Lorena Ochoa Invitational in grand style, is going to defend her title at the 2012 edition, scheduled to be played from November 8-11, at the Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico.
It could be the biggest shock of the month for Asian contenders, who lost the last three straight titles on their home soil, if Matthew succeeds in showing her best form.
The victory can end a one-year wait, as Matthew has not been able to win any event in the 2012 season so far.
Last year, the Scottish star looked in her best form as she subdued all her rivals right from the start of the four-round tournament. She got off to a solid start as she posted a 69 in the opening round.
Having shot a total score of 276, Matthew was able to inflict a four-stroke defeat on her nearest rival Anna Nordqvist.
Observes said that the upcoming battle might not be easy for the 43-year-old golfer due to the presence of young guns, but she has vowed to improve her position this time.
It remains to be seen how the veteran star faces players like current world number one Yani Tseng and Suzann Pettersen of Norway, but her chances to win are not bad.
Matthew had shared her thoughts at the end of the 2011 edition, saying she was more than happy to win after over two years. She had put her complete trust in her game and had vowed to continue her stunning form in the 2012 season.
“I’m absolutely delighted. Already I don't think it's quite sunk in yet. I got off to a good start and hung in there in the last few holes, so exhausted at the moment but I'm sure I will pick up after a margarita,” said Matthew who has grabbed a total of four LPGA titles so far in her professional career.
“I played well. Really good shot to the first, with a wedge, then 20‑footer for birdie, then wedge into two and holed it 15‑foot for birdie, so a great start. Then No. 6, the par 3, I holed that, and that was a bonus one”.
