I have 1 male cat that I have had for 6 months, he is about a year and a half old. We just brang home a female cat home, that is about 5 years old, and two of her male kittens both 7 months old. Now We put all the cats together in a room, and now, the mother doesn't like her own kittens, OR our male cat. The two kittens get along with each other, and our Male cat doesn't get along with anyone either. What should I do?!~

  1. New feline relationships equal lots of time and patience.  Your cats will eventually work everything out, but it does take time.

Here's an article you might find helpful:

    Good Luck!

  2. the momma is probably thinking...what the h**l is going on!!...

sounds like you seriously freaked her out!

I would separate the family from the adult male and then gradually ease their relationships and not just throw all of them in a room together and call it gravy... =]

  3. just seperate them so they won't harm each other

  4. wait

  5. you have completely freaked her out, I would immediately isolate her in one room with food, water and litter.

It isn't that she doesn't like her own kittens, but more that she doesn't recognize them any more.  The smell of your own cat has mingled, and she sees everyone as a threat.  If her kittens and your male get along, leave them in the main part of the house.  If not, take her kittens and put them in the same room with her, after wiping them down with a clean damp cloth that you first wipe her down with.  It will put her scent back on her kittens and she will feel calmer.

I recently had some foster kittens that I took out on a field trip.  I feel the need to do this with fosters to help them adjust to the changes that are coming up in their lives (neutering, going up for adoption, living in a new home) and when I brought the kittens home, the mother went off her rocker.  The kittens smelled like the new environment and not the room where they have been staying. She attacked the kittens, attacked me, etc  but after the kittens had been home for an hour or two she was her old self.

Overly protective mothers react this way.  They want everything to stay the same, and change really freaks them out.

So now that the mom is isolated for a few days, start bringing in bedding from the kittens and the other male.  This will help her adjust to the new environment with the new cats in her life.  You can lock up the kittens and let her explore the rest of the house and get used to their scent with out having a confrontation.

after she calms down quite a bit, and explored the new territory, if she seems up to it, you can re-introduce them all together in a neutral environment - away from food and litter.

I also highly recommend the book Cat vs Cat.  Lots of great information on how cats interact with each other, what is appropriate behavior and when you should step in.
