Catterick’s Monday meeting subject to inspection
Catterick’s meeting scheduled to take place on Monday, February 13, 2012 is under threat of abandonment, as the cold weather in England has worsened over the past couple of weeks.
Due to the current situation, an inspection has been scheduled at the venue on Sunday. The organisers will only make a final call once they have taken a close look at the racecourse tomorrow.
Although the weather conditions in the country have been bad for racing, the organisers in Catterick were hopeful that the situation would get better until race day. However, they will have to wait and see whether the temperatures get warmer or not.
According to the weather forecast, temperature will rise on Sunday and Monday, which is a positive sign for the local officials. However, the main concern is that the track has been frozen for the past eight days, and will take time to get ready for
action.
Clerk of the course, Fiona Needham, stated that despite the good weather forecast, there is a threat of abandonment. She added that the mercury fell way below freezing point over the past two weeks, which affected the track badly.
Despite that, the local organisers will be trying their best to get the racecourse ready for action on Monday. They will be hoping that the temperature gets warm enough to assist in melting the frost.
However, Fiona believes that the track might not be ready for action. She was hoping that a drastic change in conditions could help them, but also stayed realistic about the situation.
According to Fiona, “We had freezing rain yesterday and the ground has been frozen since February 3. The frost is quite deep in the ground but it is forecast to warm up on Sunday and Monday.”
She went onto say, “The inspection will give us a chance to review what's happening but I think the relatively warmer weather may arrive a little too late.”
The horse racing fans in England have been deprived of some quality action over the past couple of weeks. However, the conditions are expected to improve in the coming days, which is a very good sign. Moreover, the British Horse Racing Authority (BHA)
has also announced some additional fixtures to entertain the fans.
