Question:

Cattery or home visits?

My cat is blind. When I go on holiday, should I put him in a cattery or have my Dad come in once a day to feed him?

Last time we left him with Dad feeding him for a few days, he got stressed and started pulling his fur out because he needs human companionship (especially being blind).

But if we put him in a cattery it will be a new, small environment which might stress him even more.

Nobody I know could live in my house because they all have children or their own cats to look after.

  1. I don't know where you live, so I'm not sure if what I'm going to suggest is really feasible where you are.  But where I live, there are boarding kennels that offer more than just a cage, food, water and a litter box.  The place where I take my kitty whenever I have to be gone for a few days is great.  The cats all have lots of human contact for cuddling, playing and grooming (brushing).  It doesn't take long at all for a cat to figure out that they're in a nice and friendly place.  If this isn't an option for you, I think you should have your dad or a pet sitter go to your place to take care of him.  It's stressful, sure, but at least he's still in a familiar environment with familiar scents.

  2. He would be less stressed in a cattery, they will give him more attention than your Dad just coming in once a day!!

  3. Its better to leave cat in its own home and get someone in to feed. Catteries are stressful.

  4. I'm not sure where you live but I wouldn't put him in a cattery. The sounds and smells of the other cats could distress him even further. If your dad can't sit and play with him for an hour or two each day, then i'd try cat sitting (http://www.ninasnanniesforpets.co.uk/ or a google search). the people come to your home, feed, play with, look after your cat. its not that expensive, i presume only the same as a cattery, and is less likely to distress your cat as he will be getting alot of attention.

    hope this helps!

  5. I'd leave him at home, he wont get anymore attention at a cattery then he will with your dad popping in. At least he hasn't got the stress of new smells and sounds. Car ride, travel box. He'll then have to learn his new layout and will bump into things and panic coz he doesn't know where is a safe place to hide.

Leave him at home, leave him your worn clothes dotted all over the house so he can smell you and go to sleep on them.

  6. I think that you would be better off taking him to a cattery (cat hotel). Make sure that it is a good one though so your cat is well taken care of. If someone at the cat hotel is checking on him constantly and taking good care of him, he should feel right at home. Hope I helped...
