Caue Wood and Dylan Lightfoot move into Round 2 of Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
Despite demanding conditions prevailing at Burleigh Heads in Gold Coast, Australia, Brazil’s Caue Wood and South Africa’s Dylan Lightfoot emerged triumphant in their respective Round 2 heats of Billabong Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Championships to successfully extend their life in the event on Monday, January 23.
With his win in the ninth heat, Wood advanced through into the third round, removing Japanese Kan Watanabe from the contention for the event title in the process.
America’s Kalani David was also forced to make a premature exit from the competition after conceding the win to Lightfoot in the 10th heat.
With tricky two-foot waves and on-shore prevailing at the primary event site, the surfers were faced with a challenge of making the right choices without taking too much time during their heats to increase their chance of taking the win.
The ninth heat saw both Wood and Watanabe struggle to find good waves. However, a 4.33 off his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the battle and an addition of 5.60 points to his account later proved to be sufficient to seal the fate of the battle in Wood’s favour.
Watanabe trailed close behind Wood throughout the course of the heat after earning a 4.33 and 4.27 off his best-two waves to eventually finish 1.33 points behind that of his rival’s.
The 10th heat saw Lightfoot put on a rather impressive performance to get the better of David and advance through into the next round of the competition.
As the battle got underway, the South African went through a series of average wave-scores before posting a 6.50 on the score-board. He immediately followed it up with an identical 6.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.00 points.
David failed to come up with an adequate response and was forced to surrender victory to Lightfoot after finishing with a heat-total of 10.60 points, finishing 2.40 points behind the latter.
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Gold Coast in the third and final event of ASP World Junior Tour and will determine the men’s and women’s 2011 ASP World Junior Champion.
