Caue Wood and Kalani David prevail in Round 2 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
Brazil’s Caue Wood and Hawaii’s Kalani David managed to get their hands on top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at the Huntington Beach Pier
in California, America, on Wednesday, March 28.
The successful result in Round 2 served to add both Wood and David to the Round 3 (Round of 96) line-up. Argentina’s Marcelo Rodriguez and Mexico’s Dylan Southworth confirmed their place in the next round of the competition as well after taking first runner-up
positions in the 11th and 12th heat respectively.
The local and international talent competing in the latest ASP 4-Star event at Huntington Beach found themselves battling difficult surfing conditions on the opening day of the event. The size of the waves was pretty decent, though the same could not be
said about the frequency of scoring opportunities. The surfers had to work really hard to post a decent score on the scoreboard in order to ensure their survival in the event.
The 11th heat pitted Wood against Rodriguez, America’s Keetin Devine and his compatriot JD Lewis in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Wood posted a mere 4.00 off his first business-wave, but managed to back it up with an impressive 7.00-point wave later in the heat to finish with a heat-total of 11.00 points. The scored remained unbeatable, consequently earning Wood the win.
Rodriguez made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 9.67 points, which comprised of a 5.67 and 4.00-point wave.
Both Devine and Lewis were forced to make a premature exit from the event after finishing with a heat-total of 8.83 and 6.87 points respectively.
The 12th heat saw David walk away with the win after collecting a couple of scores in the five-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 11.60 points.
Southworth ensured his survival in the event after finishing with a heat-total of 10.36 points, which included a 4.93 and 5.43-point wave.
America’s Keto Burns failed to make it into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 9.60 points, whereas Hawaii’s Eli Olson rounded out the bottom position after finishing with a two-wave total of 7.10 points.
Both the surfers were consequently forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
