Caught with possession of marijuana by police?

recently a friend has been caught by the police with about 18 grams . it was in brisbane and he has been set a date to go to court, i was wondering what the penalties could be. also this is the first encounter with the law he has ever had .

he needs a lawyer first and foremost. In this country (USA) you can get a lawyer appointed to defend you if you don't have the money to hire one yourself. It is also a misdemeanor here if you possess less an ounce. It is a minor offense. Not like trafficking, or possesion with intent to sell. Hopefully it was all in one bag and not split up like he was planning to sell it.....it is interesting though to me. I will have to look up the laws for drugs in Austrailia!  Good Luck to your friend. We smoke here pretty freely as long as you don't flaunt it or sell it.

It's less than an ounce.  Should be just a fine especially if your friend hasn't got a record.  Your friend should dress smart casual - no ac/dc tee shirts etc - and try not to act like a smartarse and debate the law with the judge.  If lucky (judge hasn't had a bad day - judge's kids are not junkies etc etc) it should be $200 or less.
