Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker is hoping to impress new manager Andre Villas-Boas, and hopes his performances for Team Great Britain in the Olympics will help his cause.
The 20-year old centre-back was recently signed on a new four-year contract with Spurs this season, with Villas-Boas having led the initiative to keep the player at White Hart Lane this summer.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 Under-21 international spent last season out on loan with Welsh side Swansea City. His performances for the Swans helped him get rewarded with the new deal at Spurs when he returned to his parent club. The season-long loan was meant to help his
development as a player and get used to the rigours of the Premier League since at that time, he was unable to break into the Spurs first team set-up.
Caulker impressed with Swansea, making 26 appearances for the club and featured regularly for the side, helping them to finish 11th in the Premier League. After returning to Tottenham, the player was called up for the Great Britain football team
by Stuart Pearce.
His inclusion in the 18-man squad was confirmed last month and he made his debut in the team’s 2-0 friendly defeat at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858. Caulker then went on to start all three games for the team, and impressed with his dominance in the centre. The player
is hoping that his performances will be enough to impress his club manager Villas-Boas, and help his cause of breaking into the Spurs regular set-up and feature for them on a consistent basis this coming season.
Team Great Britain were knocked out of the Olympics on Saturday night as they went out on penalties against South Korea. Despite their exit, the team had pulled together a run of solid performances and the 20-year old defender stood out in most of them.
Speaking to the press after the game, Caulker said:
“The Olympics has been the perfect way for me to show the new manager what I can do and to make sure I am not out of sight.”
“He (Villas-Boas) seems a very interesting guy with lots of great ideas”
“It's a big positive for the club and he seems to put his trust in the young lads.”
