Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker is anticipating a big year with the North London club and is confident that he will impress new manager Andre Villas-Boas and make his claim for a first team spot.
The 20-year old central defender has only made one appearance for Tottenham. The player started in the 4-1 loss to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 in the Carling Cup back in 2010 and has spent previous seasons out on loan at Yeovil Town, Bristol City and Swansea City.
The young centre-half has been tipped to be a future Spurs captain and his loan spells were aimed at helping his development for the rigours of the Premier League. His displays while out on loan have not gone unnoticed and he has recently been offered a
new four-year contract at Spurs.
Caulker is also an Under-21 http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international and has recently been included in the Great Britain Olympic football team for the London games that are set to commence this month.
He has been with the North London side since the age of 15, and he is finally ready to make an impact under new manager Villas-Boas. The Portuguese manager has revealed that Caulker is part of his plans and has challenged the centre-back to contend for a
spot in the first team.
Speaking about the chance he has been given, Caulker said:
"I'm looking forward to going back and getting a feel for the players. Signing the new deal before this was a weight off my mind. This is the start of a big year for me, with the Olympics and then heading back to the Spurs. I'll hopefully get an opportunity
and I'll take it.”
"Of course you want the chance of impressing the manager, but I had a chat with him and understood his plans and I think when I am back, it's down to me to impress him."
Talking about his loan spells away from the club, Caulker explained how they have helped him become a better, more mature player. He said he's grateful for everything the club has done for him and hopes to prove his worth in the coming season.
Caulker will be an important player to have in the Spurs lineup, with injuries constantly plaguing the back four over the past few seasons. Spurs have already signed Belgian centre-half http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 from Ajax, and Caulker’s presence in the team will give
them much more reliability and stability.
