the americans wanted their lands but chief joseph had to fight to protect his pple and land.  given their nomadic life they occupied a big part of montana.  they owned abt 17,000,000 acres (69,000 km²) - parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, in an area surrounding the Snake, Salmon and the Clear Water Rivers. tribal area extended from the Bitterroots in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west between latitude 45°N and 47°N.  thats too much for the white man, so they fought and in the end after abt 13 battles, chief joseph gave up.
