Cavaleiro aims to prevail in the Investec Derby for trainer Marcus Tregoning
Cavaleiro will attempt to land a victory for trainer Marcus Tregoning in the Investec Derby, which is scheduled to take place on 2nd June, 2012 at Epsom.
His might, his strength and his stamina will all be tested, competing against tough competitors like the Qipco 2,000 Guineas Stakes winner, Camelot.
This victory will be the second Derby win for the trainer who trained the runner’s sire, Sir Percy, who bagged the victory in 2006.
The son of Sir Percy, out of mare Khibraat, will be mounted by rider Hayley Turner, who is the second female to compete in the Investec Derby after jockey, Alex Greaves.
Over the course of his short career, the three-year-old has shown tremendous potential in six starts, with two wins, a single second place finishes, an three finishes on the money.
Tregoning was satisfied with Cavaleiro’s most recent start at Lingfield, where he finished third in the Group 3 Betfred Derby Trial Stakes on 12th May, 2012, at about 1 mile and 4 furlongs.
Regarding this performance, the trainer stated that:
"The piece of work Cavaleiro did at Lingfield on Saturday was the best bit of work he has done all year and we were very happy with that."
The young runner also scored in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury in September, 2011, where he defeated race favourite, Harvard N Yale by a neck.
The trainer believes that the chestnut colt is in i good form, and hopefully he can land him another Derby after a gap of six years since he has the capability to dominate the track.
"I really do like him - he will stay very well and hopefully he will be able to go the pace. We can do what we want with him as he is a very straightforward ride and I imagine we will be tracking the pace - they don't normally hang around in the Derby.
It's extraordinary having such a small field, possibly because people are scared of taking on Camelot, but it's a strange year.”
