  1. they(being some scientist specialized in animals) establish a name like a person names a dog breed or cat breed.  Some are named after characteristics, some are named after from where they started, and some from how they look! hope this helps

  2. There are currently thirteen breeds recognized by ARBA/ACBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association/American Cavy Breeders Association). In order to develop a new breed or variety, (at least in the States), you have to receive a COD (Certificate of Development) from ACBA. Even then, it can  take years of research and breeding to have the breed or variety recognized. There are several COD's pending in the US.

  3. Really the main difference between cavy breeds are their coats. For example a Peruvian has long hair, an Abbysinian has wiry hair that goes in all directions, and an American has short hair. I would suppose that once they breed them true so the same characteristics are passed down the pigs may be eligible for their own breed.

  4. They establish different breeds based on their characteristics.   Different characteristics come about when two different types of the animal reproduce.
