My cavy Peanut might be having bloody urine please help me!

The other day my sister said that Peanut was "scent marking" Spike (spike is our other cavy) My sister said that it looked orange but couldn't tell because it went by so fast. Today I oiled them (i mix essential oils and olive oil, it fights mold and fungus, my vet recommended it) Well I let them run around for a little while and when I came back I saw that their was an liquid-y orange spot on the floor! I cleaned their cage and gave them fleece and towels on the floor so that I can see in the morning. I still need to schedule a vet appointment. Peanut is a boar, he is a year old, he is very hyper. He has malocclusion (teeth problems) so I need to hand feed him every night. I researched it and it could be bladder stones, a urinary tract infection or my mom says it could be something with his kidneys... which does it sound like? Email me if you want more info, im online now.! thanks!

  1. Ahhh my guinea pigs name is Peanut as well! But mine's a girl hehe.

Anyways, my guinea pig Buttercup is recovering from the same problem. She was in the early stages of cystitis which in its early stages causes an orange tinge to their urine. If it advances any further, it can be very painful. How is his water intake? Do you find that the water in their bottle is going down quicker than usual? This can be another symptom. My vet took Buttercup in for a night and witnessed the orange pee and heavy water drinking for herself. Buttercup also had a wet bottom which is a sign of a UTI. It could also be stones - my vet ruled that out by doing an ultrasound. Get him to the vet ASAP. UTI's are treated quite easily. Your vet should (if they are guinea pig savvy) prescribe Bactrim. Twice a day you inject approx. 6.5 mL into your piggie's mouth with a syringe. It is very sweet and my guinea loves it! I'm doing this for a week, then taking her back to the vet for a check-up. I highly doubt it's a kidney problem, that's more likely to happen in older piggies, where they can suffer from renal failure (kidney failure) It does sound like cystitis to me, but stones or sludge might also be affecting Peanut. A vet should ask if they can do an x-ray or ultrasound to rule this out.

Well done for researching! I presume you're taking Peanut to an EXOTICS vet? If not, please be sure the vet prescribes Bactrim.

  2. First up, good name! One of my guinea pigs' name is Peanut too! It could be urinary tract infection, but you might want to check again with the vet, or see another vet just to see what they think (good to get a different opinion sometimes). Good luck with your guinea pig though :) Hope he gets better!

  3. check out the site www.kvvet.com and u can call them and ask questions.

  4. Make sure that your guinea pig is getting plenty of vitamin C. I've had this problem before especially with male guinea pigs. I think that it is probably bladder stones.

  5. Here is some great info on urinary tract infections, if that is what this is:

Also, I am not so sure about the oils you are using. They don't sound good. Are you sure your vet is cavy savy?
