Question:

Cbr f3 and charging system problem?

so my 1996 cbr600 f3 has been killing the battery lately after 30 mins of riding. I just tested the voltage through battery and gave me this:

bike off: 12.8

bike on: 12.4

giving it gas at 3rpm: 12.8

at 5-6 rpm: 13.4

any ideas on what could it be and why it's not reaching the 13.8volts it needs for the battery to charge?

what should I check, and how should I check it?

  1. These are supposed to be famous for rectifier problems.

If you look at the recitfier and it looks like its been hot, that's probably the problem.

My son downloaded a shop manual someplace but I don't know where.

  2. Can be only 2 things - either stator or regulator.

You should be able to check the stator with a multimeter, I would look online to find out how to probe your stator.  If that checks out OK then check ALL your regulator/stator connections for corrosion.  If that's all OK then you know it's your regulator.

I don't know of any reliable test for a regulator (bummer)

I suspect you'll find it's the regulator at fault.

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE REGULATOR WITH THE BIKE RUNNING!!!  You can fry your stator.

    Good Luck!

  3. Assuming your battery is ok, couple of things to check. first make sure all your battery conections are good. Check and make sure the voltage regulator is grounded properly. There are 3 wires going from the alternator to the regulator, you should get a low resistance between any 2 of the 3 wires. You should also be able to get more than 60 (sixty) volts AC between any 2 of the 3 wires when the engine is running. If all these things check out ok, I would suspect that your regulator is not working properly.
