  1. Dreamdre almost has it right.....reghrdless of wether you have a full driving license, if you are learning to ride a motorbike, you must have 'L' plates.

If you intend to ride a motorbike, then it is a good idea to take your CBT test. My husband and I both took ours about two years ago, we had a great instructor, who took us up from a 125cc through to a 500cc to enable us to take our tests on a bigger bike. We actually took an intensive course which included the CBT, and the full motorcycle test, which at the time cost us about £600 each. My husband now has a Honda CBR 900 Fireblade, and I have a Kawasaki CBZ500

Check for more up to date information on the DVLA website.

  2. sorry dont kno wat a cbt test is but Im hoping no-one else does either then I get the 10 points hehe

  3. If you got your full UK licence before Feb 2001 then no, you don't need a CBT to ride a 50cc moped. However if you've never ridden before I highly recommend it, it's NOT as easy as it looks and you need to be taught to ride defensively.

If you got your licence after that, then you need a CBT licence before you ride anything, even a 50cc moped.

You will not need L plates in either of these circumstances.

If you want to ride anything over 50cc then you need a CBT, regardless of your car licence. If you want to go on to ride bigger bikes then you'll need a CBT before you start lessons.

CBT's are basic training, you do practical training off the road (usually in school grounds or something), theory training, and then at least 2hrs on the road training. There's no exam, if they think you're safe, you get your CBT certificate. It lasts forever if you have a car licence.

They cost anywhere from £70-£140 inclusive of bike and safety gear.

  4. CBT means compulsary basic training for motorbikes even if you have a full licencse you still have to do this very simple training. If you want to ride a motorbike upto 125 cc then you go out for the day with a instuctor and a couple more learners all you do is drive about in a car park in and out of cones and breaking then you go out on the road for a couple of hours its simple thing to do and a good day out what it cost now im not to sure.
