Okay, I bought two guns that my wife and I really love. The XD-40 subcompact and a 3" Ruger sp-101 chambered for 357 magnum and 38 special. Neither of us have yet fired a gun for the first time . I was wondering which gun I should give my wife for her ccw class, and which gun I should keep for my ccw class?

  1. The two of you should go out to the range and do some shooting, see which one is better for you and which one she is more comfortable with.  If it turns out to be the same gun, trade in the other one for a mate to the one you both like.

  2. Why try to make that decision by yourself?? Why don't you take both of them to the range and test fire them? Let your wife decide which one she feels more comfortable with.

  3. Let her use the Ruger (with .38 special ammunition) and you use the XD.

  4. keep the 40 for yourself give her the ruger and shoot .38 special.

  5. Depending on the class, take both.  Explain to the instructor that you are new to owning a gun and want to learn to safely operate both weapons.  The ruger is a simpler design, so whichever one of you is less mechanically inclined should get it over the XD.

  6. Since you haven't shot either one... Go to the range and practice with both. The CCW class is not the time to learn how to hold and fire a weapon. If you don't know what you're doing then find someone who does or find a private instructor. Or go to the range, watch the shooters and ask for a hand.

Immediately go and get some snap caps/dummy rounds and completely familiarize yourself with loading unloading of the firearm. Learn how to comfortably and smoothly work all levers, buttons, and controls. CCW means that you are legally allowed to carry a weapon, it does not make you competitent.

Practice! Be proficient! Don't get yourself or your loved ones hurt through your and your wife's ignorance!

  7. Chris, I live in Texas and when my wife gets her CCW I will insist that she take the course with a semi-auto.  Why?  In Texas if you qualify with an auto you can carry either auto or revolver.  If you qualify with a revolver you can only carry a revolver.  If there are no such provisos where you live, then the revolver is much more user friendly.  In the case of the SP-101 I'd use practice .38 Special ammo (either 130 grain ball or the old 158 grain lead ball) to qualify with.

  8. Use the XD and let your wife use the 357 but get some 38 special ammo for her.

  9. You   keep the 357 magnum it's a nice gun

and your wife the 38 because it's smaller and lighter
