Cecil, Wells and Hill destroy the mighty Yankees to win the series for the Jays
The New York Yankees were never able to get in the game last night as they lost the match to put the top league position up for grabs. The game was always going to be tough against the Toronto Blue Jays. Both teams were on level terms in the series and this game was looking out to be a blockbuster event for the night. The fixture was being played at the Rogers Centre in Toronto with a crowd of 31,449 fans cheering both the teams.
The New York ball club came in with a victory from the night before last. After thumping their opponents 11-5, the Yankees were looking to win their next fixture, given their run for the Western Division title. They have been locked in a fierce title contest with the Tampa Bay Rays. This match up was a crucial chance to oust their chasers from the top slot. However, that never came as the Jays gave the World Series Champion a staggering defeat.
Phil Hughes made his way back to the team this time for pitching duties. The ball thrower has had the best of times in the league. He’s been averaging 4.12 on earning runs and has a good season record. However, last night saw a disappointing game for the 24-year-old. The player became the first pitcher in the season to pitch on 102 occasions in 3.2 innings of play. His throws were off mark and Manager Girardi confirmed the lacklustre performance in the post match analysis. The Yankees’ ace man struck out 6 hitters but conceded 5 walks, 6 hits and 5 runs.
The Jays, however, have been doing fairly well recently. They lost their last two series but their players are performing on prime levels. And, their last game was a disappointing encounter as the team was not able to win the series back then, given their irregular player performance trend. Fortunately, this wasn’t to be the case once again as Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells performed well for the team. The key feature that the management was looking for was consistency. And that was what the roster brought in to the game.
Brett Cecil was one of the team’s major stars to shine and it came as no surprise that the player performed well again. The 24-year-old got the game to click for the Jays as he struck out 5 hitters and pitched on 106 occasions, playing for 8 innings. He conceded 7 hits, 2 runs and 2 walks. The strong ball throwing earned the pitcher a 3.80 run average.
The Jays were the first ones to get on the scoring sheet in the bottom 1st. Wells got a special triple when he smashed his shot to the right centre. The hit got Fred Lewis past the last base for the first Jays run. Yankees catcher Jorge Posada then made on to make a mess in the game when he passed the ball and got Wells the opportunity to pass the last checkpoint for the second run.
The Blue Birds continued their scoring in the bottom 3rd when Wells got into full swing once again. The power hitter smashed a 359 feet homer to the left as Jose Bautista looked on approvingly from the base. The hit got two added runs to the tally and placed the Toronto side 4-0 up above the New York side. It wasn’t till the top 4th that Marcus Thames made the first run for the Yankees. The player made his mark on the game when he put himself and Robinson Cano through the final base with a strong, 404 feet homer to the left centre. This immediately changed the game as the deficit was reduced to two runs for the visitors.
The Jays, however, kept on fighting as Aaron Hill scored off Wells’ infield single to the second. This got the team’s 5th run in the bottom 4th. Hill made his mark again in the bottom 5th when he drove a 375 feet homer to the left. This got the Toronto side 6 runs on top. The only other run then came in the top 9th when Eduardo Nunez’ single to the right centre got Austin Kearns to score the last 3rd run for the Yankees. The game ended with the Blue Birds on top, thrashing the visiting Yanks 6-3.
