Cecilia Braekhus retains all three titles after unanimously nailing Jessica Balogun – Boxing News
Cecilia Braekhus, the current WBA, WBC, and WBO female welterweight champion, made a successful title defence against German proud Jessica Balogun, the current Global Boxing Union Female welterweight champion, in a 10-round bout held on June 2, 2012.
The ring for the bout-stacked pay-per-view was set up at Herning Kongrescenter in Herning, Denmark and the fight card was organised and promoted by Nisse Sauerland of SPAG. The show was televised live from various Danish channels and also witnessed Reda
Zam Zam take on Giuseppe Langella in a non-title 10-round bout.
The Saturday night showdown between Cecilia and Jessica mesmerised the roaring crowd. Cecilia, 30, the Norwegian proud and the owner of three world titles was ready to defend her possessions at all costs and did give ample tough time to the German challenger.
Also known as ‘The First Lady’, Cecilia was entering in her career’s 20th bout with an undefeated streak. She has nailed just five of her opponents by knockout and is notorious for being a tough and resilient belligerent.
This was the fourth time that Cecilia was defending her all three titles. Her Saturday night opponent, Jessica, 23, was slightly more experienced and much younger than the champion Cecilia.
Despite the fact that Jessica had agility and speed on her side it seemed that she is outclassed by Cecilia’s counter attacks and at few moments exhibited as if she has no idea how to tackle the undefeated champion.
Jessica was entering in her 24th career bout and boasted 22 wins with 10 coming via knockout. As far as the technicalities and stats are concerned, Jessica possessed the upper hand and it is this reason why Cecilia was not able to collect a knockout win.
Also known as the ‘Hammer’ or ‘Sugar J’, Jessica created many problems for the champion lady but Cecilia always made a comeback with her impressive, swift and almost invisible jabs.
Cecilia’s defensive style aided her a lot. With a powerful defence at her disposal, Jessica’s raw powered knockout jabs seemed almost powerless. At the end of the battle, all the three judges unanimously declared Cecilia as the winner and still the WBO,
WBC, and WBA champion.
After the win the Norwegian First Lady praised Jessica and stated, “Jessica was a tough opponent, we knew each other very well, but I did what we had trained for and I am happy about the win. This was a good victory for me.”
Cecilia will now take on the winner of Anne Sophie Mathis and Holly Holm International Boxing Association and World Boxing Federation female welterweight championship bout.
