Cecilia Cho becomes the official number one amateur golfer in the world – Golf update
Cecilia Cho of New Zealand becomes the official number one amateur golfer of the world. 16-year-old Cho is only the second New Zealander to the top the Women’s Amateur Rankings introduced by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club after Danny Lee who held the top
spot at the amateur rankings in 2008.
16-year-old Cho, a member of the Pakarunga Club, has a long list of honours and triumphs which led her to the current first place standing. She was victorious in an exceptional 15 occasions in 2009 and also won the Australian stroke play title the following
year.  Cho successfully defended the New Zealand Amateur Championship at Bridge Pa in Hastings after winning the title for the first time in 2009 in Titirangi at the young age of 14. She was only the second player in history to achieve that milestone after
Lorraine Lambert of Australia in 1991. Cho was also the first ever New Zealander to hold the Riversdale Cup winning trophy held in Melbourne recently.
Cecilia Cho, who is shaping up to be a phenomenally talented golfer, has replaced Mitsuki Katahira of Japan and now wears the crown of the best amateur golfer in the world. Katahira briefly held the top spot for about a month. Cho receives the news in New
Delhi, India along with her team mates where she is taking part in the Queen Sirikit Cup. The New Zealand team at the tournament also includes the wonder-kid, 12-year-old Lydia Ko. In the latest rankings, Lydia Ko has dropped to the fourth spot owing to her
inconsistent performances.
The latest women’s rankings underwent a few adjustments, especially in the top ten spots. Megan McChrystal of the United States improved her spot by one place and jumped up to the third place. Fifth, sixth and the seventh spot were retained by Leona Maguire
of Ireland, Kayla Mortellaro of the United States and her compatriot Emily Tubert respectively. The largest move at the top was by Lisa Maguire of the United States, who improved 21 places to her current 12th spot.
