Cecilia Cho is the ‘new queen’ of New Zealand Under-19 Golf Championship 2010
Cecilia Cho is the new queen of the New Zealand Under-19 Amateur Golf Championship 2010. She demonstrated her incredible potential of accuracy and swings with a score of three-over par 75 despite the presence of terrible conditions at the Coastal Chisholm Park Golf Club.
Ironically, this was the lowest score in the four day session. The weather is held liable here as it rained in the presence of strong torrential winds and the average result was a sack of bogeys and double-bogeys. As for Cho, she fired an appreciable three-over 217 for 54 holes and was followed by Chantelle Cassidy, who posted a score of 80 to finish at the second place and Mun Chin Keh, who finished at third with 85.
On the other end, the Under-19 men's competition also ended and it proved to be a great havoc as well but as every tournament has a winner so does this. Simon Brownlee seized the victory with a score of five-over 76 in the presence of similar conditions as that of Cecilia Cho’s. Brownlee finished the first thirteen holes with a par but amid conditions, he dropped three shots. He was followed by Owen Burgess, who was only two shots behind. Owen posted three birdies and three bogeys on his scorecard.
Similar conditions yet again prevailed at the Otago Golf Club, where the final moments of the playoff for the Under-17 honors was in progress. Jordan Bakermans of Christchurch took lead over Taranaki's May Maaka and made a new record of 3 under 67. The winners of different degrees were awarded with souvenirs and scholarships. Brownlee was awarded with the Aaron Mahoney Scholarship along with an expert tuition from Peter Fowler. Peter is the former Australian and New Zealand Opens champion. This concept of scholarship has been introduced recently by the Mahoney family. The purpose is to support the players who want to pursue golf as a career. The Mahoney family had lost their son Aaron in a car accident while he was attending a golf academy in Dubai.
Coming back to the winner’s performance, Cecilia Cho delivered three birdies with three bogeys in the front nine and later finished the back nine with a par. She has added two more national titles to her credit after this performance. The 16-year-old belongs to the Pakuranga Club and according to experts; Cho gave an extraordinary performance in the final. The tournament was also arranged by the Pakuranga Club under different categories. These categories were decided on the basis of age and gender. Paul McCoy, the club’s president said that the basic purpose of the layout was to test the players’ potential and the result is that every year some fine players are produced from Auckland.
Meanwhile, experts believe that Cho has the potential of a star and very soon a new Melissa Reid is expected out of her. Although, this is her junior career game but if she kept on playing with the same determination and effort, the time is not far when we will witness her as Rookie of the year.
