Question:

Cedar shavings as rat bedding?

I'm making a table, and I noticed that the shavings from my plane look like bedding in a way. Can this cause some sort of respiratory problem in them?

Much thanks.

  1. Well, Years ago we used cedar in our mouse, hampster and guinea pig cages. Then they said it is not safe as it has too much oil in the wood and can cause cancer and other ailments for rodent like species.  Your best bet is to stick with aspen or other types of bedding on the market. Don't use the cedar just because it is a waste product of what you are making...

  2. No, don't do it.  cedar is not a good wood for them anyway, (yes, respiratory problems) and this wood is not clean enough for bedding, and th shavings are probably rough.

  3. NEVER use cedar as bedding for ANY animal. It can cause respiratory problems.

  4. cedar bedding is very bad for animals because it does cause respiratory illness, rats are especially prone to it, so it is very bad for rats

  5. NO!! Cedar shavings are a definite no for bedding use, especially for rats. It can not only cause respiratory problems but also skin conditions and organ damage. Also, do NOT use pine shavings. I made the mistake of doing that with one of my rats, after all it was specially marketed for rodent bedding so it had to be safe, right? Wrong. You should try shavings from aspen trees if you just want to use wood shavings. Or you can even use the weird little pellets or that papery stuff that they sell in pet stores called CareFresh. Heck , you can even use an old T-shirt, though its probably not as comfortable for the rat as bedding would be. Just DON'T use pine or cedar.

  6. Cedar can damage the respiratory system and other organs.  It isn't a safe bedding for any animal.  Safe beddings include aspen, Yesterday's News and Carefresh.  I'm going to try fleece with my rat at his next cage change and see how that goes, that way his base and his hammocks will all match :-)

  7. cedar and pine give rodents resperatory issues. use aspen or carefresh instead.

  8. Do not use cedar, it can, and most likely will cause respiratory problems, so it is best not to use it. I would suggest "Carefresh", a bedding that you can get a most pets stores.

  9. yes respitory problem use aspen it's cheap and doesn't do any harm.
