Celestino Caballero discloses Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. challenge
As usual, Celestino “Pelenchin” Caballero is seeking out all relevant competition because the world’s best fighters won’t fight him.
Caballero, notoriously avoided in the ring due to his height and wraith at the featherweight level, told boxingscene.com he may pursue a bout with Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. following an upcoming meet Saturday with Jason Litzau because Vasquez has “called him
out.”
Usually it’s the other way around.
Caballero clarified that a bout with Vasquez Jr. is not his first option.  “You know I want to fight [Yuriorkis] Gamboa or [Juan Manuel] Lopez or one of the other champions at 126 pounds.  Hopefully we can make it happen.”
Caballero will be fighting Litzau at 130 pounds, but his statements indicate he would like to return to featherweight to qualify for the relevant competition in the lower division.
In the past he has called out “Juanma” Lopez of Top Rank with no response from the undefeated WBO featherweight champion.  Many in the boxing world feel that “Juanma,” who is coming off his best professional performance against Rafael Marquez, is avoiding
“Pelenchin.”
In a recent development, Caballero showed up uninvited at "Juanma's" weigh-in with Marquez and called him out.  A bodyguard reportedly attacked Caballero, causing chaos amongst reporters and those in attendance.
Caballero confirmed that Vasquez had challenged him, but noted a caveat: “Yes, he called me out, but to fight at 122 pounds.”
“I would have to kill myself to get down to that weight. That's why I moved up to 126 in the first place.  I can't make the weight anymore.”
Aside from being the reigning WBA featherweight interim champion, Caballero is a professional reggae singer.  He has defeated notable opponents such as Ricardo Cordoba and Steve Molitor, the latter of which was an undefeated Canadian prospect and IBF super
bantamweight titleholder.
