Question:

Celica GT-S VVTL-I solenoid problem

I have a 2000 celica GT-S and lately the lift in the vvtl-i has not been firing. When it went to "fire" and boost the engine up 40hp the engline light would go on with a p1693 or another error, pointing to the solenoid. I had the solenoid replaced and it worked 3 or 4 times in a row. Then it made the "check engine" light go on again. now if i rev the engine up less than 10 minutes after the car is started(in the morning only) it will fire. After that it will make the light go on.

So what could be the problem? i saw on this website ( http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=250432 ) that the filter could need cleaning?

  1. (a) Start the engine and warm it up.

    (b) Disconnect the Oil Control Valve (OCV) for VVTL connector.

    (c) Maintain engine speed at 6,500 rpm.

    CHECK:

Measure continuity between the oil pressure switch and body

ground when apply battery positive voltage between terminals

    of the OCV.

    NG Replace oil pressure switch.

I am assuming that you have changed you oil regularly (3-4,000 miles). The filter could be dirty as referenced in your website, oil pressure could be low. It uses oil pressure fron the engine to move the cams and actuate the lift.
