Cell division and mitosis?

When a cell has reached its maximum size, what two alternatives does it have? When does the cell carry out one alternative over the other?

When cell grows beyond a certain critical size its surface area to volume ratio  decreases, this causes decrease in rate of absorption of nutrients and excretion of waste. So cell has no other alternative but divide to restore the surface area to volume ratio - mitosis.
