Can anyone point to a study that shows the effect on driving while having a conversation with someone in the passenger seat vs the effect on driving while talking on a cell phone?

  1. Some a*****e in front of me + talking on cell phone = imaginary scene where I get out of my car and put my boot in their ***.

  2. you shoulden't be having a conversation while driving anyways, people also say using the non hand held cellphones are a good idea thats complete bullshit. Talking while driving is basicly multi- tasking and NOBODY is capable of focusing on driving and having a conversation with full attention to either, so my point is don't multi task while you drive.

  3. pasenger helps watch trafic also a cell phone friend wont cell phones are large part in many fatal crashes cars cross the center line officer shader my dad

  4. Look, just don't get on the phone!! Leave it 'til you stop somewhere!

The difference between using a cellphone and talking to a passenger is, you don't have to take your eyes off the road or one hand off the steering wheel to talk to a passenger. The passenger can look at you, but you don't need to look back.

Some idiots send texts while driving..

One day, I was watching a young, novice 1st- year female driver in my rear vision mirror... she was holding a cellphone in one hand to her ear, and between talking to her "friend" and listening to him/ her, was eating a hamnburger with the other hand! So who was steering the car??

Study or no study, it is a ridiculously stupid thing to do....!

  5. i dont know a study but it's common sense... if your on the phone your focusing on the person talking to you.. hands free or not. With a passanger your talking and if traffic is slowing down or a kid is running towards the road.. they can shut up and yell.. the person your talking to you'll be so focused on them you won't even noticed... A few times while i was talking on the phone and driving when i got off i was like shh it... did i just go through a light? and a plus.. my dad was sitting  with his turn single on to turn onto a very flat straight road n traffic was coming towards him so he couldnt go.. he got rear ended at 60 mph and she was on the cell.. if that person was in the car with her he could have said slow down theres some1 stopped up there.. Its been 8 months and he's still disabled. he's a fireman and will probably never be able to do his job again b/c of her.. and he's not getting anything for it b/c in the good ol state of PA if you don't have something called "full tort" on your insruance  your screwed. lol well since then i dont talk on cells and drive.

    thats my story lol

  6. Yuppers; read it and weep.

The rapid rise in popularity of wireless phones has contributed to an increased number of automobile accidents reveals a new study conducted by researchers from Harvard University. According to the inquiry, which was released Monday by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, the number of cell phone subscribers has increased from 94 million in 2000 to more than 128 million in 2002.

Using current cell phone usage estimates, researchers determined that drivers talking on their phones account for six percent of U.S. automobile accidents each year, killing an estimated 2,600 people and injuring 330,000 others. As a result, consumers spend an estimated $43 billion a year on the economic costs (medical bills and loss of life) of cell phone related accidents.

the link below is a gold mine of info. just type in cell phone use in accidents or something similar into your search engine. It's a hot button topic and you will find loads of info.

  7. Statistics are probably available from the National safety council or the national highway safety office.--- but statistics only reflect reported phone related incidents if the phone was noted in the report. They are a problem --the hands are occupied and the hands should be on the steering wheel. Normal talking does not require hands off the wheel

  8. you don't need a study to know it is a bad idea
