Cell phone instant messaging question?

I just got a new cell phone with unlimited text messeging, and i want to know if i also get instant messaging for free as well. Does it use the internet and or minuets. Or does it use the internet but it doesn't cost money?

I asked my AT&T guy, and he said that it only costs you money if you DONT have a data plan. And its a fairly small amount, because you only get charged when you use the internet to log into your instant messanger. Not per message.
