I read this article and it sparked a question: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080723/ap_on_he_me/cell_phone_warning

Do computers (specifically a wireless computer with wireless internet) emit radiation? If so, is the amount as dangerous as the cellphone?

  1. Yes.  Same with speakers for your stereo.  Also police radar units.  It's everywhere.

  2. Yes, but nobody spends much time with a router in their ear or pocket. It's the closeness of the cell phone radiation that concerns some people. At this point I don't think the alleged dangers have been either demonstrated or disproved, so it's not clear how dangerous any of this might be.

  3. Yes all forms of electronic equipment emit radiation the frequency and strength depends on what the equipment is for.

And definetly your wireless computer emits radiation and it is very close to cell phone frequencies which border on the microwave much like a microwave oven. There are numerous sources on the net but have a look at this one http://omega.twoday.net/stories/1755556/

  4. Your light bulbs emit radiation.  That's what light is - radiation.  Some frequencies of radiation are dangerous, some aren't.  News stories like to use the word 'radiation' because it sounds scary, they want to play peoples emotions for ratings.    Radiation does not automatically mean radioactivity, the 'radiation' from your cell phone is not the same as the radiation in the core of a nuclear plant.  Cell phones and wireless internet are both microwave, though not nearly as intense as your microwave oven.  Fact is, you're bombarded by radiation both natural (sun, earth, cosmic rays) and manmade (cellular signals, radio waves) all the time.  The radiation from a cell phone isn't a little field around it that you have to stand next to it to be exposed, it's the signals flying through the air virtually anywhere you go in any population center (radio is even more prevalent.)  You may have noticed that holding a cell phone to your ear for a long while makes your head hot, this is the direct microwave exposure to your tissue.  This is the only conclusively known biological effect of microwaves, if the intensity is high enough it can cause a burn, like your microwave oven.  But a cell phone is not that intense and only causes localized warming.  A wireless modem would do the same if you held it against your body for a while.

    Uncomfortable?  Yes.  Dangerous?  No.
