Cellphone to call from Rome to New York?

I will be travelling to Rome soon and would like to know if there is any cellphone or pocket electronic communication device that perhaps I can rent. I would like to be able to communicate to my children from Rome to New York, but I am not familiar what device and service will work. Can someone please suggest? If there's any to rent rather than buy would be better, as I don't want to spend too much. Any suggestions? Thank you.

no you cant rent a mobile im afraid, or at least you cant in the uk anyway. if you can get a cheap mobile and top it up with at least 100 dollars or 50 pounds or more then you can phone home for a limited amount of time. either that or get a PDA off ebay and you can email home and use MSN

Buy a cheap/secondhand prepay phone in Rome. Or take an unlocked GSM phone with you and buy a prepay SIM card when you are there. Any network would do.
