    Natural killer cells are MHC unrestricted but kill by noticing the absence of a downregulating motif  located in the MHC class I structure .They do not recognize ppetide fragments presented in the context of MHCs. Often viruses will produce compounds that prevent MHC expression on cells to avoid

    Cytotoxic T cell recognition of viral peptides presented in the "groove " of MHC class I molecules. So if the virus prevents this action of cytotoxic T cells by disallowing expression of MHC class I molecules then natural killer cells will target that cell because it does not contain the inhibitory motif in the MHC complex that all normal self cells have
