Cellular South Cup Round 1:Alexa Glatch defeats Beatrice Capra 6-2,6-0
American tennis player Alexa Glatch glided through the opening round of the 2011 Cellular South Cup in straight sets, defeating compatriot Beatrice Capra in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. It took the qualifier less than an hour and twenty minutes to oust Capra
and claim her place in the second round of the International tournament.
Despite the fact that World Number 288 Glatch is ranked 54 spots lower than Capra, the match was hardly a competition at all. 18-year-old Capra put up a fight in the first set, but quickly faltered to give way to her opinion. She managed to fire off one
ace during the match, and saved four of ten break points; however, 21-year-old Glatch outdid her by fighting off seven of eight break points. Glatch’s performance increased further in the second set, and she took the match with a bagel. Capra was only able
to score six points in the last set. The two players played a total of seven service games and seven return games. Glatch won 69 points out of a total of 111, while Capra won just 38 percent. Both players had four double faults apiece.
California native Anna Glatch joined the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] in 2005, and has won five International Tennis Federation [ITF] titles so far this year. Although she has not won a WTA Tour title so far, significant achievements include a runner-up
finish at the 2005 US Open. She lost the final to champion Victoria Azarenka. Her first career event was played in her home country, USA, in 2004. She also played at Indian Wells in 2005, where she fell in the first round.
The right-handed player A has played in nine matches so far this year, with this triumph being her sixth victory. She fell in the qualifying rounds of the ASB Classic International, the Moorilla Hobart International and the Australian Open this year.
World Number 234 Beatrice Capra has yet to turn pro and competes as an amateur player. The majority of her matches have been played on the ITF circuit; she has won a solitary title on this circuit at the 2009 Williamsburg event.
Capra has lost four of the six matches she has played this year. In the new season, she has played at Midland, Lutz and Plantation so far; all these events are sponsored by the ITF.
Glatch’s win over Capra has helped her to proceed to the second round of the tournament. She will be competing against Dutch player Michaella Krajicek or Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic. Zahlavova Strycova is currently World Number 56, and
holds the position of the highest-ranked player at the tournament.
