Celtic Manor Wales Open round two latest
With the second round of the Celtic Manor Wales Open under way, Chris Wood has tumbled down the leaderboard.
With a disastrous round that included three double bogeys, yesterday's leader finds himself just one-under-par for the tournament, tied for 21st place after finishing five-over-par today.
Former Open champion Paul Lawrie had a round that even he could only describe as "ridiculous", the Scot making a push for fourth place after finding five birdies over the opening nine (he started on the 10th) - and then carding 11 strokes on the par-five second.
That included a woeful eight putts, Lawrie hitting the ball back and forth along slopes and hollows after finding the green from the bunker with his third shot. That one calamitous hole effectively consigned the 41-year-old to a missed cut, after he finished three-over-par for the day, four-over in total.
Welshman Rhys Davies had a disappointing day, losing ground after yesterday's fine play finishing two-over, and currently tied for 16th place when he had begun the day tied for fourth; alas, four bogeys and a double on the 12th saw his fortunes take a dive today.
But Luke Donald recovered after a duff first day; having slumped to four-over during the opener, the Englishman carded nine birdies, though Donald being Donald he had to end on a bum note, the 32-year-old double-bogeying the 18th.
Colin Montgomerie was also in action, and level-par for the day after playing the first two, though keeping his mind on the matter at hand will test all the Scot's powers of concentration. The Ryder Cup captain was the object of a tabloid tale this morning, the Daily Mirror reporting that the 46-year-old had been carrying on with an old flame behind his wife's back.
Montgomerie released the following statement earlier today: "I am very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much. I would ask that my family and I are given the space and privacy to continue trying to resolve the issues. I will be making no further comment."
