Settle down for a true story.  Ever wonder why you are allowed to wear almost anything you want to school? Or you may wear your hair and have any facial hair you want when attending school?  Prior to 1969, all students were required to abide by the dress code of their individual schools.  Whhe I went to high school in the late 50s and early 60s, you were not allowed to wear blue jeans to school; your side burns could not be below your ear lobes;  your hair could not cover your collar.  Girls would only wear skirts to school and they could not be above the bottom of the knee.  Girls could not have excessive short hair and only appropriate jewelery was allowed.

That all changed with a US Supreme Court Decision handed down in 1969.

In 1967 in Barrington, Illinois, a very rich and upscale community northwest of Chicago, a 17 year old senior went to school the fist day in September with hair below his collar and facial hair.  He was suspended and eventually expelled.  His parents sued the public school district and when they won in the Supreme Court, all students were allowed to attend public school wearing any clothing they wanted and were permitted to have any hairstyle they wanted.

In Short, The Supreme Court said as long as the dress of the student and their appearance does not pose either a health hazard to the other students or themselves, the school authorities could not deny the student their right to freedom of expression

The public school district in Barrington censored the dress and appearance of its' students.
