Question:

Census Report Help?

I have been looking for the address where my great grandparents lived via census reports & such, but can't find it. They were Janos (John) and Sofia Kushnier. May be spelled Kusnyir, Kusnir, or even Kurnes. Sofia's maiden name was Almasy. We do not know for sure what country they originally came from. John & Sofia had children that included Anna, Mary and John. They lived in Philadelphia, PA. I have been looking in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census reports but it doesn't make any sense to me... I would love to visit the house where they lived, even if the house is no longer there. I do believe they attended Holy Ghose Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Philadelphia because my grandmother (Anna) has a baptismal certificate from 1913 from that church. Your help would be greatly appreciated... Christina

  1. I found this on ancestry.com  1910 census.

    Anna  Keichner (Kushner)

    Age in 1910: 6

    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1904

    Birthplace: Pennsylvania

Relation to Head of House: Daughter

    Father's Name: John

    Father's Birth Place: Austria

    Mother's Name: Eva

    Mother's Birth Place: Austria

Home in 1910: Robinson, Allegheny, Pennsylvania

    Marital Status: Single

    Race: White

    Gender: Female

    Household Members: Name Age

    John Keichner 32

    Eva Keichner 24

    Anna Keichner 6

    Mary Keichner 5

    Helen Keichner 3

    John Keichner 1 4/12

    Anthony Kananie 29

There is a note correcting the name to Kushner.

  2. Call or write to the church to see if they have more family records in their archives.  Their info is:

    Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church

    2310 South 24th Street

    Philadelphia, PA 19145-3207

    Telephone:

    Rectory (215-334-5129)

    Lower Hall (215-339-9232)

    Parish Center (215-339-9092)

PS if the census info someone else posted is correct, they lived in the Pittsburgh, PA area (Allegheny Co.)  which was quite a distance from Philadelphia--especially so many years ago.  Be sure to double check everything.

  3. Part of my answer to your other question:

    Sofia Almasy Kushnier--his mother-in-law

    **Janos Kusnyir (John Kushnier)--his father-in-law

Anna Kushnier--his wife, born & raised in Philadelphia.

(NOTE--**their Ellis Island records indicate they sailed from Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) on the Carpathia, the same ship that rescued survivors of the Titanic. They settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

They attended Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church. Sofia & Janos are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, just outside of Philadelphia.

    www.familysearch.org

(This would fit the right time frame, and it gives his birth place)

  4. Here in the UK the address is always in the first column, I would suggest you have a look at the blank census form on www.ancestry.com

    Hope this helps.
