Question:

Census and Death Records in the USA and CANADA?

There's a person in my family tree that was born in London, but was known to be travelling back and forth between the USA and Canada c1932 with his wife.

I am looking for census results and also death indexes. I don't know whereabouts in the States or Canada they would have been, so I am looking for general results, and hopefully free lookups (because why pay, when you can get them for free?!)

I need this information to prove that he was married to a particular woman (I'm looking to find HER details as well as his), so I can continue my research here in the UK.

  1. Census records post-1930 won't be available to you in either country. Canada has some extra returns that are outside the normal census years which you can access here: http://www.afhs.ab.ca/registry/regcan_ce...

US census records are only available through 1930 until the 1940 returns come out in 2012. But passenger records are available at a few different sites, including http://www.ancestry.com If you can't afford the paid membership, several people on this site will be happy to do a few individual lookups for you.

Otherwise, you can try the public record searches and death indices at several state and provincial sites, as well as the US Social Security Death Index if they died after 1964.  http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

  2. Your question makes about as much sense as walking into a supermarket, and telling the clerk that "I want some food, but I don't know what it is".  And if, by some miracle, someone there is able to read your mind and figure out what it is that you want to eat... you hope someone will come home with you, and put it away in your pantry for free.

Cyndi's list is the supermarket of genealogical resources.

As for lookups.. people here do them ALL THE TIME.. and even go beyond that.  Since you don't even supply a NAME, much less a country... what you want is not a lookup, but free research.

  3. E-mail me, I would be more than willing to help as much as I can.

  4. The latest census records available in Canada are 1911 so if that will help, here is the link:  http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/T...

(when you enter the surname, it will show you Ontario results 1st- just go to geographic location and click All).

Death records in Canada are only available for deaths prior to 1908 (unless you pay a fee and provide proof that you are a direct relative).  You could get lucky with these links to the SSDI and obituaries but your success there also depends on the year of death.

Your best bet is to edit your question with their names (assuming they are deceased) so that someone with a subscription to ancestry.com  can search border crossings, marriage and census records for you.
