Census to go all out in the Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes to keep building on his wins
The 3-year-old colt Census defeated Michael Owen owned Brown Panther by 1 ¼ lengths in the Group 3 CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes in his last outing at Newbury on 13 August, 2011.
Trainer Richard Hannon believes that his colt should get a shot in the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes for colts and fillies, especially after his power packed win in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes.
The son of Cacique, out of Slieve by Selkirk, Census has been a model of consistency since his maiden breaking race at Bath on 17 October, 2011, in the Profab Windows Maiden Stakes where he got the best of 13 other runners.
He broke his maiden in his third attempt, and since then haven’t looked back and out of his last four starts, he has won twice and rolled in as a runner up in as many times.
Prior to the Geoffrey Freer Stakes, Census picked up a win in the Scope Handicap at Newbury over a distance of 1 mile and 3 furlongs on a ground labelled good to firm.
Under jockey Richard Hughes, Census broke out of the gate fine and then was taken off the pace to track leaders from the outset.
Under strong urging from jockey Richard Hughes, Census pushed along to claim the lead well over one furlong out. He was shaken up again, and it resulted in the horse quickening at blinding pace clearing the final 150 yards easily.
He defeated six other runners that day, defeating Seelo by 2 ½ lengths on 13 May, 2011.
Out of seven starts, Census has gone on to win thrice and with one runner up finish in his 2-year-old racing career, with the earnings of £55,677.
Census will be sent as the 5 to 1 favourite to win the St Leger Stakes, and he will be up against the favourite Sea Moon who is rated as the 11 to 8 favourite. Census will be tested on the field with another rival with high backing dual Classic winner, Blue
Bunting.
However, trainer Richard Hannon is staying positive ahead of the much awaited Group 1 race at Doncaster.
