I have a cousin, and he's 15 years old and he's in special education(for slower, mentally handicapped students) in public school. The thing is, he really can't hang out with "normal" kids, but he can't or wouldn't get anything out of hanging out with kids with sever handicaps either...so I was wondering is anyone knows of any free programs and things like that he can attend to meet friends and stuff? Because he really doesn't have anything and i want to help him out.

  1. Yes there is a program for people with developmentally delayed teens and young adults. My sister belonged to it, It's called Young Adult Institute and they are in each borough of the city. Put YIA.org in the search engine and you should be able to find one near you.  IF your cousin isn't able to travel by himself they will come to pick him up and that will give him something to do after school and on weekends.  My sister used to go all kinds of places with them, movies, amusement parks, malls, fairs and other places that kids like to go.

  2. Also look into big brothers..they may be able to hook him up with a buddy that will enjoy hanging out with him

  3. I don't know where your from but you might try Easter Seals, your county MH/MR base service unit, Special Olympics has bowling, swimming, and different competitions. I hope this helps. Good luck.
