Question:

Central A/C only blows cold air at night. Could the prob. be as simple as refrigerant line insulation?

Hi HVAC folks. This is my 1st question and I know it's a little vague... so, sorry (and thanks) in advance. :-)

I use a typical split system (Goodman air handler & furnace in my attic and a 2 year old outdoor Payne condenser/compressor unit). I noticed about 2 months ago when cutting grass near the outdoor unit that part of the refrigerant line going from the house to the unit was exposed. For some unknown reason, it was just 'gone' (perhaps the weather or a critter had something to do with it?).

I also use a fairly new (about 3 years old) ritetemp digital (non-mercury based) thermostat, FYI.

THE PROBLEM: Just in the past few days, I've noticed (and it seems to be gradually getting worse daily) the unit is doing a terrible job of cooling the house DURING DAYLIGHT (HOT) HOURS (air from vent is noticeably warmer). However, at night, it's cold air as usual.

QUESTION: What might be causing this? My guess is the 'missing insulation' on the refrig. line. Any ideas? TIA!

  1. Sounds much more like a refrigerant leak especially if it is recent and getting worse.  Only a qualified tech checking the pressures can tell you for sure.
