Question:

Central Air condition problems?

Please i need help. I have noticed that my AC isn't cooling like it was before. As a matter of fact, it's hot inside my house. I went outside to check to see if the fan was running and it wasn't. I have checked the circuit breakers and everything. I've even reset all of them. The whole system is new and was working fine until i came home from work. The breaker on the AC unit has no fuses and i even reset it. The power wire seems to be intact also. I just don't even know what to do. I don't want to spend money on a tech if i can do something myself. It doesn't seem to be a big problem. Nothing seems to be broken or damaged. It sounds like some kind of power problem to me. Is there anything you suggest i do? Please help.

  1. Check the thermostat. Make Sure it's set for cooling and below room temp.

  2. if your fan is running in side but the out side unit is not.  probably going to be a contactor on your outside unit. ants love to get into them and keep it from contacting together.

alot of service calls are on contactors or capacitors

  3. there is a float switch in the metal pan that the air handler sets in.....check to see if the pan has water in it .......try a meter on the breaker to check voltage.....

    lic. gen. contractor

  4. HVAC Tech.: If you live in the south  could be ants. They love to build nests inside condenser units, especially in the electrical system.when the thermostat is in the "COOL" setting dose the outside unit "HUMM"? If yes, you probably have ants and dirt keeping the contacts from closing.Suggest Pro. help.  Or you can turn off all breakers uncover the electrical components and look see.    If no Humm, contactor is bad or you lost control voltage from thermostat (wire broken somewhere. OR bad thermostat, one of those steps should show you where the problem is. Good luck!

  5. You may also want to check the float switch. This is a switch that shuts the condensor off to protect the unit. The float switch is usually found at the air handler. The newer systems have a little pvc pop up cap that is connected to the drain line. Your drain line could be clogged and that is shutting down your system.

  6. So your fan inside is running but the fan outside is not?

While you stand at the condenser (outside unit) have some one set the thermostat to cool and bring the temp down. Can you hear the compressor come on. If you do, then reach in with a stick or rod, yard stick, and spin the blades on the fan. It may catch up and run. If it does, the capacitor is bad. If it doesn't it could be a bad contact or the fan motor is bad.

Now, back to when they set the stat to cool, if you don't hear the compressor come on, then you could again have a contact problem or a bad breaker outside.

    Hope some of this helps.

  7. It may be that one of your inside breakers has flipped. Make sure they are all on. The inside unit uses a different breaker than the outside unit. It may be that someone used a hairdryer while the unit was running and flipped the breaker. Just a guess. The dog could have chewed the small wires going outside to the unit from the thermostat or the weedeater could have chewed up them wires. The guys are maybe thinking that the float switch on the condensant drain pan may be it but on a brand new system I don't see it.
