I have a 1700 sq ft house and I'm told I will need a 3 ton 12 to 14 SEER AC unit outside (the compressor went bad + we built the house 6 yrs ago) estimated cost was $2,500 (American Standard ac unit) we live in North of Dallas, TX so yes it is hot as h**l in August.

Question is... is it a good deal ???

  1. 3 &1/2 ton American Standard ? You had better take them up on it before they change their mind.I wouldn't install the same unit for under 3000$.

  2. Yes it is, but I'm sure you can find something else out there that's a little less expensive.

  3. go here for more details about songs and new rm files songs download http://music4urs.blogspot.com

  4. yes good idea.we just bought a goodman central heat/air all electric we are saving about $50.oo/$75.00 month.get rid of gas.last winter and this spring /summer we have saved greatly.Be sure you are insulated good,do not let them blow in,because in a few years it will make it way into house and cause breathing problems.

  5. If the house is six years old most of the time the WARRANTY is ten years on a compressor from the manufacture, and three tons is light, more like 3.5 tons, around 400-500sf per ton. Get the model and serial and call American Standard they will inform you of the warranty! If under warranty the job should be no more than 500-600 dollars unless you like to spend money! And to upgrade the air handler will double the price of the job. I wish I had customers like you who have no problem replacing the A/C system every six years. Was this the same company who installed the A/C system in the first place. Why did the compressor fail, if you do not find the reason why the old compressor failed then the new one will fail too, they should not go bad for no reason. Is the compressor a burn out which means a electrical problem, did it lock up due to lack of oil a piping problem or low on gas, or are the valves bad due to eating liquid freon a dirty coil, or over charged. You could have a problem in the panel box, the disconnect box bad, freon leak, no hard start on a TXV system, piping problems?

Many questions and no answers. A well installed system will last for 15-25 years with no problems.

  6. I would tell you this.

If you are going to have to repair your old unit then go with the parts that fit the thing. Trying to cut corners will cost you a lot more money in the long run. Just grit you teeth and do it.

  7. not bad, but an alternative you may want to look into is a new method geothermal heating and cooling where you drill ports down a few hundred feet into the earth, and the consistant air tempature from that depth can set the houses inside enviromental temp for your home year round with only a one time cost.

  8. How was the size of the unit determined?

Did the contractor perform a Manual J calculation or just use Rule-of-dumb sizing (x tons per x square feet)? Every area and house is different. The heat load must be calculated to properly size your a/c.

Are they changing the indoor coil as well? Minimum efficiency standards were different 6 years ago. Minimum efficiency is 13 SEER now ( not sure where 12 SEER is coming form). It could be that they are installing a 14 SEER unit on a 10 SEER indoor coil giving you a 12 SEER efficiency. Have them show you the ari rating of what they are attempting. They will need to know the model of the indoor coil and the model of the out door unit to submit it to the ari website. If you are paying for a 14 SEER a/c make sure that the indoor coil is rated for 14 SEER otherwise you are wasting money.
